Maldives Myths 2026: 11 Things Travellers Often Get Wrong
By Admin·Updated 17 Jun 2026·3 min read
Updated 16 June 2026. A lot of Maldives mistakes start before the guest even enquires. People assume every island is the same, every overwater villa is private, every price includes transfers, or the weather works like a normal city forecast. This guide fixes the common myths that lead to poor bookings.
1. “All Maldives resorts are the same”
They are not. One island can be quiet and romantic; another can be active, family-focused or built around all-inclusive value. The right resort depends on transfer, reef, dining, villa layout, children’s facilities and total final price.
2. “The cheapest room rate is the best deal”
Not always. A cheaper room-only rate can become expensive once transfers, meals, 17% TGST, 10% service charge and USD 12 per person per night Green Tax are added.
3. “Overwater is always better than beach”
Overwater villas are iconic, but beach pool villas can be more private, easier with children and better for guests who want direct sand access.
4. “You can transfer to any resort at any time”
Seaplanes usually operate during daylight hours. Domestic flights and speedboats also follow schedules. Late arrivals may need a Hulhumalé overnight.
5. “Local islands are the same as resorts”
Local islands can be beautiful and great value, but alcohol rules, swimwear areas, dining and privacy are different from resort islands.
6. “Rainy season means it rains all day”
Wet-season travel can still be excellent value. The right question is not only “will it rain?” but whether the resort, activities and price work for that month.
7. “Families should avoid the Maldives”
Many resorts are excellent for families, but you must check kids club, lagoon safety, transfer time, meal plans and room layout.
How IM uses this
This page supports first-time travellers who are not ready for a package yet. Send IM your dates, budget, flight arrival time and villa preference; we can quickly tell you which assumptions need checking before you book.

The biggest myth: all Maldives trips are the same
The Maldives can be a honeymoon, family holiday, local island stay, diving trip, group villa escape, wedding, wellness retreat or ultra-luxury private island. The wrong assumption leads to the wrong resort shortlist.
Important myths to check before booking
- Myth: all resorts are close to the airport. Reality: transfers vary from short speedboats to seaplanes and domestic flights.
- Myth: all inclusive always saves money. Reality: it depends on inclusions and dining habits.
- Myth: rainy season means constant rain. Reality: weather is more nuanced and value can be strong.
- Myth: overwater villas are always best. Reality: beach villas can be better for families, privacy and shade.
- Myth: taxes are small. Reality: taxes, service charge, green tax and transfers can materially affect the final total.
Where to verify the details
If a package looks good but you are unsure what is missing, send IM the quote. We can check the parts travellers often overlook.
How IM uses these myths in quote checks
When a guest sends a quote, these myths are often where mistakes appear: transfer missing, tax not included, wrong villa type, weak meal plan or arrival time that does not match the resort. IM's role is to catch those gaps before the guest pays a deposit.
