Maldives Diving Guide: Whale Sharks, Mantas & Beyond
Why Dive in the Maldives?
With over 1,000 fish species, five species of sea turtle, and some of the best visibility in the Indian Ocean (15-40 meters), the Maldives consistently ranks among the world's top dive destinations. Whether you're a beginner or advanced diver, the sheer diversity of marine life here is extraordinary.
Whale Shark Season
The South Ari Atoll is home to the largest known population of whale sharks in the Maldives. While sightings occur year-round, the best months are November to April, when these gentle giants congregate in the warm, plankton-rich waters. Constance Moofushi and Centara Grand are ideally positioned for whale shark encounters.
Manta Ray Encounters
Manta rays are spotted throughout the Maldives, with peak season from May to November. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is famous for mass manta feeding events — up to 200 mantas gathering in one location. The bay is a UNESCO-protected site accessible from Soneva Fushi. South Ari Atoll also has reliable manta cleaning stations.
